Mid-Day Sunset over Balsfjord

Mike Zawadzki Photography

The title "Afternoon Sunset" may seem confusing at first, but Tromsø's latitude of 69.6492° N puts it into a special category of cities around the world that have very strange lighting conditions and daylight hours throughout the year. In the summer the sun doesn't set, and in the winter it does not rise above the horizon, only creating a slight glow in the sky. This image was created in mid-November, just before the time period of "no sun" beings. It is both fascinating and wonderful to watch the sun hang just above the horizon for several hours. Think of a sunset in super slow motion.
