Surprise Aurora Over The Peaks of Kvaløya

Mike Zawadzki

Peaks of Kvaløya is one of my favorite images of the Aurora Borealis that I've captured. Back in February 2015, I headed out on the island of Kvaløya with little hope of finding anything worthy. It was snowing rather heavily and the weather radar was not promising. However I learned from my guide Terence Murtagh that it would be wise to wait. After driving around for 6 hours looking for a hole in the clouds, we admitted defeat and started to drive back to our hotel, about an hour away, or more, in the snow. Just before turning around, we did see the sky start to open up a bit, and we were treated to this lovely display of "spike" shaped Aurora over some mountain peaks. This night was when I truly learned patience in chasing the lights.
